Fun and Functions @ HW

By Audrey ’27

The life of a Harvard-Westlake student is filled with a busy schedule, intense studying, and unwavering dedication to academic success. However, amidst the hard work and determination, there are plenty of opportunities to take a break, recharge, and add a little joy to the day. Throughout the school year, the campus is alive with activities and events that help foster a sense of community and provide students with a much-needed respite from their rigorous academic lives.

Many clubs and affinity groups at Harvard-Westlake have the power to organize events that are not only fun but also meaningful. One of the most exciting and highly anticipated events is the Karaoke Night hosted by Asian Students In Action (ASIA). This event brings students together to enjoy an evening of music, singing, and laughter. It’s a great way for students to relax and bond over shared interests while celebrating the diversity of the Harvard-Westlake community. Similarly, the Latinx Hispanic Student Organization (LAHSO) hosts a vibrant Dia de Los Muertos celebration, a festive and educational event that exposes students to the rich cultural traditions surrounding this Mexican holiday. The event is full of music, food, and activities, allowing students to experience and appreciate new cultures in a fun and engaging way.

These affinity group-led activities not only provide students with a much-needed break from their studies but also offer an educational experience. They create an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in traditions, customs, and perspectives that may be unfamiliar to them. In doing so, these events help to cultivate a more inclusive, culturally aware student body. Students walk away with new knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the diverse backgrounds and experiences of their peers.

In addition to these cultural events, the campus is often filled with sweet treats in support of various student-run affinity groups and organizations. Bake sales are a popular tradition at Harvard-Westlake, with groups like Empower and Simon Says Girls Club organizing sales of brownies, cookies, and other baked goods on the quad. These events not only allow students to satisfy their sweet tooth but also serve a larger purpose—raising funds for causes that support and uplift the community. Whether it’s raising money for charity, supporting a cause, or simply promoting a sense of camaraderie, these bake sales are a delicious and enjoyable way to give back while having fun.

Beyond affinity group events and bake sales, there are also a variety of student dances that offer a fun and social way to connect with classmates. One of the most memorable events for many students is the Ninth Grade Dance, which serves as a rite of passage for freshmen as they get to know one another in a relaxed and celebratory setting. Another highly anticipated event is Homecoming, which brings the entire school together to celebrate school spirit and enjoy a night of dancing, festivities, and a carnival with a Ferris wheel. And of course, there’s Prom, the culminating dance of high school that marks a significant milestone in a student’s journey. These dances are not only an opportunity to dress up, but they also serve as memorable moments in the lives of students, offering them a chance to create lasting memories with friends and peers.

Life at Harvard-Westlake is undoubtedly demanding, but it’s also filled with opportunities for students to unwind, connect with their peers, and enjoy the many events and activities that take place throughout the year. From cultural celebrations to bake sales and dances, these events provide students with a healthy balance of work and play, helping them build a sense of community and fostering a school culture where fun, learning, and personal growth go hand in hand. Whether it’s singing at Karaoke Night or celebrating Dia de Los Muertos, these moments of joy add a unique and essential dimension to the Harvard-Westlake experience.
