Having a Dietary Restriction at Harvard-Westlake

At my middle school, I would bring lunch and snacks from home each day, but when I transitioned to Harvard-Westlake in 9th grade, my parents informed me that I would be using the school cafeteria. I was slightly apprehensive about this, since I have been a vegetarian since I was seven, and I felt concerned that there would be limited options for me. However, my fears were quickly quelled.

I found that the main hot dishes rotated each day, with the cafeteria featuring a variety of cuisines. To my relief, each day there is also a vegetarian option, and usually a vegan option as well. Furthermore, in the refrigerators, there is usually vegetarian sushi and sandwiches, as well as pita and hummus.

For those with allergies, there is always variety in the cafeteria; there is never a day when there is only one option, so you can seek out comestibles that do not contain your allergen.

For especially specific dietary restrictions or preferences, you are also always welcome to bring food from home. There are refrigerators and microwaves on campus, so cold items can remain cold and food can be warmed up for lunch if necessary.

Food is also often involved at schoolwide events such as the Multicultural Fair and Activities Fair. The school is well aware that the student body has a variety of dietary needs and desires and always aims to accommodate that, so at these events, there are almost always diverse food options as well. If you come to Harvard-Westlake and find that the food does not meet your needs, you can always request an item to be served at the cafeteria or talk to a dean or administrator. There is a culture of flexibility and an openness to individual needs on campus, so it is likely that your needs will be met.

Personally, I love the food at the cafeteria and I am impressed with the variety, and this seems to be the common consensus amongst the student body, regardless of personal taste or dietary restrictions.
