Let’s be real—school can sometimes feel like just something to get through. But what if you could actually enjoy it? By getting involved and making small changes, you can make your middle school experience more fun, interesting, and meaningful. Here are some ways to make school work better for you and those around you
Joining a club is a great way to get involved. Most clubs meet at break, and walk-ins are always welcome. Harvard-Westlake has a wide range of clubs you can join, from several affinity groups to movie watching club. Don’t see a club you want to join? Start one! Just see Ms. Tooke in Hazy 218 to get a form to fill out. All you need is a few friends and a faculty member and the possibilities are endless. Not only will you make new friends, but you’ll also get to spend time doing something you love during the school day. Even if you’re not sure what your interests are yet, exploring different clubs can help you discover what really excites you!
Though not as easy, another great way to become a more active member of the Harvard-Westlake community is to run for senator. If you become a part of student government, you can help the school in so many ways. You can plan events like spirit days and even the ninth grade dance. This is a great opportunity to have your voice truly influence what happens on campus.
It might not seem like it, but building a good relationship with your teachers and school staff can make your school experience a lot better. Say hello in the hallways, ask questions, or just show interest in what they’re teaching. When you’re on good terms with teachers, you’re likely to feel more comfortable asking for help when you need it—and it’s nice to feel like you have allies in your school! Teachers are always willing to help you during X periods, or whenever both of you are free.
School service is an important part of the Harvard Westlake community. Whether its recycling, SQUID, or cleaning out the lost and found, school service really improved the day to day lives of people on this campus. Though six periods are required, doing extra hours can even be fun. Anything can be a good time if you do it with your friends, right?
