Commonly recognized as the best part of the day, lunch is a chance for you to catch your breath and have some you time. It’s a period you can fill with any number of activities, but first on your list should be getting some food to fuel you for the rest of the day. The cafeteria boasts a wide selection of delicious food. It blew my mind when I first arrived on campus as a new 9th grader from a small sending school. My personal favorites are either the tostadas or the orange chicken (and I also love picking up a snack between classes). Another great way to recharge your batteries is to hang out with friends! Socialize and keep up with people who mean the most to you, or make new friends around campus. Maybe change up your ‘spot’ on a nice day and find a sunny location up by Feldman-Horn or on Ted Slavin Field.
Of course, sometimes the to-do list is a mile high, and lunch is a valuable time to check some boxes. The key is to find a space where you can be productive. The library is a great place to get focus, as well as the lunch tables, and even the field. Another location to consider is the teachers’ offices. Not only is it a place to concentrate, but it is also where your teachers are ready to help you out! Of course, they eat lunch too, but they will often agree to meet with you during the period. It can be especially nice if you have a test or quiz the next period, so that you can brush up on the subject.
Last but not least, the clubs and affinity groups—usually meeting at lunch on the upper school campus—are always open to new members. There is a wide selection of sessions to attend, from Empower, a group focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment, to MIxD (Multiethnic Inclusion and Diversity Club). Each club offers different activities, discussions, and snacks! Also, they generally don’t take up the whole lunch period, so if you have other business you need to get to, there will still be time for that afterwards. All in all, clubs and affinity groups are a great way to spend your lunch and get to know your community.
Lunch is a time of possibilities, and it’s up to you to decide how to fill it. There are so many places to be, and people to be with, and each day you get to choose a lunch that reflects what matters most to you.
