Ethics Bowl

By Eric ’25

Harvard-Westlake offers a large variety of clubs. However, until now, there was a club that was only offered by the upper school: Ethics Bowl! Last year, Ethics Bowl came to the Middle School. I was so excited that I joined right away, and I can say with confidence that it was definitely worth it.

People might question how fun an Ethics Bowl is, but I can assure you that it’s actually not boring at all! Ethics Bowl is where a room full of nerds discuss the moral solution to an ethical dilemma. Just kidding! The club offers a chance for moral discussion but it’s also a place to meet new people and make good friends. Even if you attend the club, you are not required to attend any of the actual events. So you can be there simply to have thoughtful and social conversations with your friends.

Ethics Bowl has also helped me grow as a person. It has taught me that perhaps my seemingly ethical view is seen in a different light by another person. Overall, it showed me that perspective matters. Here, everyone’s viewpoint is accepted at face value, and everyone present can express their opinion without worry of repercussions. One of the things I value about ethics bowl most is the freedom it offers. There are no ideological constraints like those in debate, no strict format. The only true requirement is to prove your understanding of the topic.

I highly encourage you to join the ethics bowl. No previous experience is required, and it is not a large commitment. I hope to see you in the ethics bowl some day. Whether to socialize or to compete, the ethics bowl is truly a place for everyone.
