The Dance Program at HW

By Lily ’23

The dance program at Harvard-Westlake is one of the activities that has made me fall in love with HW. I have been dancing at HW since 7th grade and I have enjoyed classes in  contemporary, ballet, lyrical, hip-hop, improv, and jazz. Now that I’m in 10th grade, I can reflect back on all of the incredible experiences that the dance program has given me.

At Harvard-Westlake, dance isn’t just a sport, a performing art, or a fun exercise class. It is truly a place where you find yourself and find the people who will become your dance family. The dancers in this program are not only the most talented dancers, but also have the biggest hearts and brightest personalities.

My middle school dance teacher Mr. Schenck has become one of my greatest mentors. Of course, he’s a brilliant dancer and choreographer, but he’s also just an all-around incredible person. My upper school dance teacher Ms. Winter is also an inspiring role model for all of us. The HW dance program teaches creativity, confidence, strength, teamwork, and positivity.

There are many levels of dance at HW from intro level classes to more advanced ones. Depending on the class you choose, there are options to take dance for a semester, a full year, or as a directed study. Also, dance is the only class at the school that counts for both the P.E. and Performing Art requirements!

Being part of Dance Production last year was one of my favorite HW memories so far.

All of the dance performances on both campuses are professional and collaborative. The stage crew builds an extraordinary set and uses beautiful lighting and projections. The unique costumes make the dances finally feel complete.

I would not be the person I am today without the dance program at Harvard-Westlake. My love for dance and the values that I have learned from this program will last a lifetime.
