What is lunch period like on the Middle School Campus?

By Olivia ’25

Although it may seem like an insignificant part of your day, one of the biggest changes that I noticed when I came to Harvard-Westlake was the lunch period. One of the cliches of high school, shown throughout movies, TV, and books, is that school lunch is something of an unappealing joke. You get a tray, you stand in line, and you get some form of mystery meat that’s barely edible. This is similar to what the hot lunch was like at my old school, and as a result I would just pack a lunch. However, I must say, now one of my favorite parts of the day is lunchtime.

The first thing that you notice when you walk into the cafeteria is that there are so many options. You can get whatever the standard lunch is for the day–maybe chicken and rice, or some form of stir fry. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you can always head over to the hot case and get some chicken tenders and (hoping that they’re available), curly fries, or a grab-and-go sandwich. If you want a healthier option, grab a premade salad from the fridge, or make your own at the salad station. To go along with that, you need a drink, of course. But what will you get? You can go to the drink fridge and get some iced tea, Gatorade, or a smoothie. However, perhaps you would rather cross over to every Harvard-Westlake student’s weakness- the boba counter. It’s going to be a struggle to not have boba every day, all day, but you might want to swap that out for some dessert. Want to get some frozen yogurt? Maybe grab a gelato cup or frozen lemonade? Or maybe some cookies or chips from the snack corner? Go ahead!

In conclusion, the cafeteria is one of everyone’s favorite things about Harvard-Westlake, and is 100% something to look forward to.
