At Harvard-Westlake, there is a large variety of middle school clubs that I am sure you will find interesting. They are very enjoyable extra-curricular activities, spanning everything from playing sports to discussing students’ favorite TV shows, from coding to baking. Among them are the Harry Potter Club, the Space Exploration Club, Musique Classique, the Among Us Club, and many more. Some of our clubs even give us great opportunities to do community service.
In the Black Leadership and Culture Club (BLACC), we learn about African American history and culture, develop our leadership skills, and do service activities. We would usually also go on field trips to historical sites. I am looking forward to being able to do that after the COVID-19 pandemic ends. In the Social Justice Club, we talk about what is going on in our communities, our country, and the world, and we do projects to raise awareness about social issues.
As you can see, there is a large selection of clubs for everyone to join. If a student cannot find a club that we like, which is very unlikely, we can start our own. All we have to do is get the approval of a teacher to oversee it. For example, one of my classmates, Jordan A ’26, started one of my favorite clubs, the Percy Jackson Club. A few weeks ago, we kicked off our club with a Zoom celebration of the release of Rick Riordan’s new novel in the Trials of Apollo series, The Tower of Nero. We discussed the new book while we ate all blue food (candy, corn chips, blueberries and soda). It was great.
Clubs are especially beneficial to us new seventh graders because they help us meet people and make new friends who have similar interests. We exchange contact information and keep in touch with each other during the quarantine. Through our clubs, we are able to be active members of the Harvard-Westlake community even during remote learning.
