7th Grade Course Selections

By Lucas ’23

First of all, congratulations to all incoming HW seventh graders! I remember how exciting it was to find out I was going to attend this school, so be very proud. I wanted to give all of you and your families a rundown of the options in terms of classes for next year because I know that process happens relatively quickly after decisions are released.

So to start off, there are a couple of classes that are already decided for you and that everyone takes. These are: English 7, American History and Government, Integrated Science I, Knowledge Integration and Tools for Success, and Physical Education 7. These are really good foundational courses that set you up well for later years. I personally really enjoyed the American History and Government course and being able to learn about each amendment within the Bill of Rights. The 7th grade science class is also very broad, and you get to learn about a variety of subject areas.

Now for the choices! You get to choose which foreign language you want to take—Chinese, French, Latin, or Spanish. If you have previous experience in one of these languages, you can take a placement test this spring to get put into the 1B level rather than the customary 1A level for beginners. The math department can determine placement as well (most kids take Pre Algebra, while others can place into Algebra I: Grade 7 or higher).

Another area of decision-making is in the arts. Students have the option between a single semester of visual art (Visual Art 7) or a full year (Foundations in Visual Arts). I would just say that if you’re someone who really enjoys art, opt for the full year, and if you’re not, take the semester. This choice also has no bearing on art electives in future years either, so don’t feel as if this is a huge decision.

Almost all 7th graders take a performing arts class, since there is a requirement that all students take at least one semester of performing arts in either 7th or 8th grade. There are quite a few choices here within instrumental music, choral music, and dance. Depending on your prior experience and placement test results, 7th graders can enroll in courses like Beginning Band, Beginning Strings, Concert Band, Concert Strings, Symphonic Band, Middle School Symphony, Boys’ Chorus, Girls’ Chorus, Wolverine Singers, Vocal Ensemble, Introduction to Contemporary Dance, and Contemporary Dance Workshop I.

You don’t get a ton of choices in 7th grade for course selections, but I think the courses you do get to take are essential in preparing you for all the options you get in academic classes and electives in future years. Good luck to everyone as you make these decisions, and definitely take a look at the HW digital curriculum guide for more detailed course descriptions and requirements!
